The trip site has the best spring floral display I have ever witnessed.

Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia Virginica) are the dominant floor cover (approximately 10 solid acres on good years) and there are many other flowering plants to bide one's time with.

Just outside Pontiac, Illinois, along the Vermission River sits Humiston Woods. The site has bottom and mesic forest along with savanna and prairie.

The spring flora is the main attraction.

Sometime around the last week in April the forest is painted in many shade of colors.

Humiston Woods is accessed from the intersection of I-55 and Illinois Highway 23 at exit 201. Travel north on Highway 23 1 mile and t urn west on 2100N (this road goes between the large hills made the the sanitary landfill. Travel 5 miles west. You cross Wolf Creek, in one mile the sign is on the south side of the road, the entrance is straight across on the north.

Park in gravel lot.

If you pass the Vermillion River, you have driven a little too far.

As always, bring what you need for comfort and safety. Biting insects and dehydration can ruin another otherwise enjoyable trip.
