La Rue Swamp and the Pine Hills Ecological Areas (La Rue - Pine Hills) are located in the Illinois Ozark Natural Region.

This is considered one of the most diverse areas in the entire Midwet, with 43% of all plant species known from the State of Illinois. North, south, east and west plant species truly diverge here.

The landscapes from from bottom land hardwood forest andswamp to talus, cliff and upland forest.

The change of elevation occurs quite suddenly with a difference of 200 or so feet.

In the spring when the snakes come out of the hibernaculum and travel across the roads nearest the swamp, they are closed to all vehicular traffic .

In the fall when they are returning to their winter homes, the roads are closed once again.

Foot traffic is alway welcome.
